8/11/2015 – Although have not written in over 2 yrs., I am still VERY PLEASED with Julie’s fantastic weaving & styling abilty! I have been a regular customer of hers since 2009 and would not think of going anywhere else. I have had to go to a wig currently and Julie is great with that process as well! To top it off…..Julie is a real sweetheart! THANK YOU Julie and thanks to a terrific salon.
7/30/2015 – Love Jewels and Robert! Jewels is a hair extension expert but I get her cut, highlight and color every other month or so for the past 5 years. This salon is extremely flexible and friendly and all of their stylists are top notch. I’ve treated friends to gift certificates and they always come back saying it’s the best haircut they’ve ever had. Jewels also did a blowout and style for my friend’s engagement photos and she did a wonderful job. My friend felt amazing!
7/30/2015 – Finally!!! I found a great stylist who really listens, explains, is a sweetheart, and, most of all does an Amazing job on my thick, wavy hair. Jewells is the Best in so many ways. I was very specific about what I wanted, she listened and my cut, both times, were exactly what I wanted and looked great! She is so professional and knowledgeable. My next appointment is already booked. The salon is always very clean, bright and easy to get to. Am very happy with my cut and with Jewells. (Allegra)
7/19/2015 – Jewel (Julie) Jones is a fantastic hairstylist! Although my hair is very thick and difficult to work with, she gave me an excellent look that lasted for weeks. She was very careful to ask me throughout the haircut if the look was what I wanted – but she also had great ideas about what would suit the shape of my face. She took her time with my haircut, even though others were waiting for their appointments, because she wanted to make it perfect. And she told them she would do the same for them. I had been going to other salons and paying a lot only to get sub-standard results. I’m so glad I found Julie at the Descend Salon! Her skills and professionalism make the haircut worth every penny. Not to mention that she gave me some cool tips on how to keep my hair in good health after the haircut! Thanks so much, Julie!!!
7/17/2015 – On my way in for a haircut with Jewels! She cut my hair for the first time a little over 8 weeks ago. I went from long…down my back…to short crop at my ears. Best hair cut ever! It has grown out beautifully but is in serious need of a trim. Jewels did exactly what I wanted and I knew that I would be going back. The salon is beautiful and very well appointed. Plus Union St. is a great shopping/dining destination. Again…Jewels is the best!
7/16/2015 – Today was the second time that I’ve had Jewels cut my hair and she did a FANTASTIC job both times. Today especially. I wanted to have 5+ inches cut off so I showed her a few photos on my phone of a style that I was hoping to recreate and she nailed it. I couldn’t be happier with my haircut and she styled it so perfectly.
3/31/2015 – Jewels is AMAZING!!! I had been traumatized by so many haircuts in the past that I hadn’t had my hair cut at a salon in 7 years. I had been cutting it myself because I have always been disappointed with paying way too much money for getting my own hair destroyed. Then I met Jewels. I came into Descend not expecting too much. I brought a photo of what I was looking for and she gave me the best haircut I have ever received in my entire life. She talked me through the entire process, why she was doing what. What each and every product was used for and how to achieve the look I was hoping for. THANK YOU SO MUCH JEWELS!! I will definitely be back to see her because she is literally the only stylist I trust.
3/27/2015 – Jewels Jones is amazing! I went in knowing I was in need of a transformation…and that’s exactly what I got! At first she was thinking of doing a good trim…but once I told her that I’m willing to go short and put everything into her hands she was enthusiastic and spirited in knowing what she wanted to do with my do 😉 She cut 12-15inches off and styled it perfectly for my hair texture and face shape! I feel brand new! It really was time to let go of all that dead hair anyways. Plus it looks so much better this length! Her insight was spot on!!! She really knows what she is doing, and that’s why I am glad I trusted her with my hair project! ~ Julie Williams
3/18/2015 – I recently used this salon for the first time and Jewells was very welcoming and sweet. She listened attentively to how I wanted to do my hair and asked me questions along the way to make sure she handled everything perfectly. I got highlights and a haircut, which turned out beautifully! I loved my experience and my new look! I would definitely recommend this salon and Jewells Jones to my friends.
2/24/2015 – My salon experience with Jewels Jones at Descend is the best I’ve had in long while. Her passion and expertise shone in her consultation to addressing my (random) hair care questions to her explanation of her process. After vetting Descend Salon on Yelp, I bought a Groupon for a deep conditioning and cut for $49. And while there weren’t a ton of mentions of Jewels, I thought with so many positive reviews and helpful photos, I couldn’t go wrong. The salon itself is welcoming and warm, chic without being stuffy, which I appreciated. I went after work on a Thursday, so their day was winding down and provided a calm vibe. Jewels is amazing! She must be good at reading people because right off she felt my energy was low – asking about my day and instead of trying to energize me, she matched my energy. During the consultation, she studied the photo I provided on my iPhone, asked questions about how my natural hair is after a wash and dry and about length. Very thorough, she was. During my wash and deep conditioning, she chatted as much as I wanted; letting me do my thing on my phone. During the cut, she explained each relevant step and indulged me by asking my random, general hair care questions (ie products). Not only is she knowledgeable, she’s personable. We chatted about her kids and it was evident just how much she adores them. By the time she was styling my hair (adding the beachy waves), I felt like we were old friends – our rapport was so natural sharing personal stories about hair care and weekend plans – yet she remain so professional in her process and instruction. I loved the end result so much that I bought a gift certificate assuring my return in 3-4 months. Professional, personable and creative – Jewels Jones is all this and more. I will be back and urge you all to check her out and the folks at Descend Salon.
4/10/2014 – I’ve moved around a lot over the past decade. The logistics of moving to a new city is always stressful enough but then there is the added problem of having to find a trustworthy new salon and stylist… Thankfully, Jewels at Descend Salon made it really easy for me this time around!
While Jewels has a well-deserved reputation for being an extensions expert, she not only did a great job with these but also with my other treatment, the keratin smoothing.
For years, I have put extensions in the back half of my head. My natural hair is about an inch past my shoulders but the reason I get extensions is to add weight and volume to make it easier to wear my hair down. Jewels was very patient and sensitive to my needs. Past stylists have tried to pressure me into adding more extensions or keeping them really long but Jewels understood that my goal was to keep a “natural” and subtle look and accommodated this, including with a really nice trim at the end where she shaped the natural part of my hair to flow with the extensions. The extensions ended up being about an inch longer than my natural hair (by choice) but add a lot more volume around the shoulders. Jewels also expertly blended two colors- my hair is sort of a light brown- to make the extensions virtually indistinguishable. Both of us had trouble picking them out from my real hair at the end! The method she used was the fusion method, which she decided upon after a detailed consultation. We considered using the band method, which she also does, but I decided on the fusion because for me in the past they’ve stayed in a little better. One advantage of the band method is that the hair can be reused to save $$ the second time, although Jewels also is available to do one round of tightening for the fusion method.
Because my hair is naturally curly, I also need to get a straightening treatment to the top part where there are no extensions. I’ve had relaxers in the past and briefly fell in love with the Japanese relaxer because it gets the hair sooo straight. Jewels is available to do this but advised me not to get it done this time because I had it about 6 months ago (different salon) and experienced a lot of breakage. Instead, she used a formaldehyde-free keratin smoothing treatment. I don’t love the keratin because it washes out over the course of a few months but at least it got my roots pretty straight and most importantly did not cause breakage when applied.
If anyone is considering a double treatment, logistically, this took two days. Jewels removed my old extensions on a Wednesday and then applied the keratin. I then spent the next 2 days keeping it straight and unwashed (and trying to avoid people who didn;t know the secret about my extensions!!) and then went back on Saturday to have the new extensions put in, which took only about 90 minutes for half my head. The price was very reasonable- $8/strand for a total of about $500 for half my head, but this varies depending on the amount of strands (obviously) and also the lenght of both the natural hair and the extensions. It can add up, but I found this price to be among the more reasonable for a city salon. There was also a charge for the cut and style at the end but this is worth it too.
I would strongly recommend Jewels to anyone needing a knowledgeable, practical and reasonable stylist for extensions and/or keratin straightening!
5/8/2012 – I am a fitness/bikini model and national level figure competitor, seeking help with maintaining my hair year round. I used to wear hair extensions for my photo shoots and competitions, and found that a lot of the extensions out there were very damaging to my natural hair. Fortunately a friend told me about JEWELS at DESCEND salon in San Francisco. The minute I walked into the salon I felt welcomed and at home. Jewels is the master of all HAIR EXTENSIONS, she listens to your request, then recommends what she feels works best for your hair type. She is very educated in hair color, texture, style and in making her clients know that they are her first priority. I live in San Antonio, Texas and fly to San Francisco every 4-6 weeks to let Jewels do her magic on my hair.
3/12/2010 – Jewels at Descend Salon is great. Her blonde highlights are wonderful. I recommend Jewels to all the blondes out there!
10/23/2009 – I decided to go to Descend Salon to consult with “Jules,” a hairdresser whom I had read wonderful things about on Yelp.com, about hair extensions, and I was absolutely thrilled with the results. I have since gone to Julie Stumphy on two separate occasions for extensions, the first time for blonde ones and the second time for a layered brown/blond look. Each time she did a great job. Her hands are swift and skilled, and she has a terrific personality to boot. If you’re considering getting extensions, I would highly recommend her. The only reason I gave 4 stars and not 5 was due to the expense of the extensions being so high, but I am telling you, they’re worth the time and money!!!!
3/22/2009 – This is the story of my 6-month journey with hair extensions. If you’ve ever wondered about it or have been thinking about it, just keep reading.
I have had super short hair all of my adult life. Then, one day I decided to let it grow. Cut. Repeat. Cut. Repeat. For years I could never get past the “ugly duckling” stage by growing the hair past my ears. Finally, it occurred to me that modern technology occasionally has a solution for what nature cannot provide: hair extensions, naturally. Tada!
I called a bunch of fancy salons and went to a couple consults, but I wasn’t convinced and it seemed like no one REALLY knew what they were doing until I got to Julie at Descend. Let my experience save you the research and the legwork -and look no further. The system Julie uses is the forefront of modern hair technology (no glue or weaves) and she’s been doing it and teaching it for years and years. Your hair savior is here.
First of all, don’t be put off by Julie’s looks. Uh, she’s pretty awesome. Kinda like a cross between Dolly Parton and Cher. But in a good way! And sometimes she pretends that she’s silly or “dumb,” but don’t let that fool you either. She’s as sharp and smart as they come, but wrapped in this tall, curvy, full-of-life-and-hair package. And her hands work magic. She’s very coordinated and, really, when you think about it, that’s what you want with a stylist. She’s got a great eye, too and best of all, she’s a good listener. Did you hear me? She listens to what you want!
About the hair extensions itself: they’re expensive. But what did you think? Don’t be stingy. If you’re going to do this, do it right and save up. The micro bead system is done with these tiny metal hollow beads that attach your own hair to the extension hair. You pick the color and the length and the quality. Julie tells you how many in all you’ll need and how much it costs and orders it for you. Unfortunately, I have very thick hair so I need a lot of extensions. The good news is that as your hair grows longer, you can keep reducing the number of extensions you have in at one time until your natural hair is at the length you want.
About the time commitment: it takes a looooong time to have them put in. It can be 3-4 hours, sometimes more, depending on how many you get. Then, as the beads grow out with your natural hair, you have to get them re-attached eventually. You don’t want the little metal beads growing more than about 2 inches out or they’ll start to show. You’re lucky if your hair grows slowly. Bad for me that my hair grows like a weed! I get my whole head re-done about every 2-3 months and small adjustments in between when strands come out. Which leads me to…
Fall out: I won’t lie. The strands come out sometimes. It’s not a perfect system. But it’s pretty darn close. You just call and have Jules put them back in if you think there’s a spot that’s thinning, but, for the most part, if you follow Julie’s instructions, you will have no limitations with your hair.
Care: I wash, I blow dry, I flat-iron, I use all sorts of products and I freely brush my hair. People think you cannot do all those things with extensions but it’s not true. Having hair extensions has allowed me to grow my own hair out while tricking everyone! All feedback has been that it looks so natural and there are no obvious signs that I have “fake” hair in there. Actually, it’s not fake hair, it’s real. Which leads me to…
The bad news: there isn’t much. But listen up: the hair is real but it’s not alive. So it will get dry after a couple months. You need to keep it really moist with serums and conditioners and going in for color/moisture treatments with Jules helps. If it gets too dry it can get knots. You cannot just drag any old brush through your hair, you need a higher-quality brush. The first night after you get them put in (or re-attached) the beads are closer to your scalp and it HURTS to put your head on your pillow! One must suffer for beauty sometimes. You get used to it after a couple days and then it’s fine. What’s a little discomfort when you’ve got shiny, long locks and you’re tossing you’re full head of flowing hair around???
I have had my hair extensions now for almost 7-months and I cannot be happier. It’s fun. I haven’t looked like this since High School! (Minus the wrinkles, of course.) I wear my hair up, I curl it, I put barrettes and hair bands in. After years of having short spiky do’s, this is so surrreal. And people freak out when they see you. That’s fun, too.
My reasoning for keeping this high-maintenance hair is that I don’t drink or do drugs anymore, so what do I have left? I play with my hair. It’s all I have now that I am married with kids and live a respectable life! Just kidding, but you know what I mean…
So, run, don’t walk to Jules. You won’t regret it. You’ll be tossing your hair around like a shampoo commercial before you know it.
